topiramate: the low down

Updated: Mar 10, 2022

Topiramate is a medication that is used for many purposes, originally developed for epilepsy to control seizures. Like many things in medicine, it was later found this medication can help with other disorders as well.

Topiramate was first developed in 1979, but it was not until 1996 that it received FDA approval as an anti seizure drug, later becoming known as a very powerful migraine prophylaxis medication as well. In 2009 the US patent for topiramate expired, but due to post marketing reports of the drug causing weight loss, in 2012 the FDA approved the combination of topiramate and phentermine, known as Qsymia.

Topiramate use alone in weight loss is considered “off-label” for weight loss. Working with a board certified obesity trained physician can be helpful to see if the addition of topiramate is right for you.

One of the (welcome) side effects of topiramate is reduced appetite. Topiramate is usually started at a low dose and increased weekly.

Who can use it?

If you have a history of migraine headaches, talk to your doctor or a pillarMD physician to see if topiramate is right for you.
